It's been the model for serious debate on important issues, aplace where people could go to discuss their differences without theshouting that is so prevalent on today's "news" programs.

But the "Nightline" viewers have known for 25 years is on theverge of extinction after Thursday's announcement that its iconicanchor will call it quits.

Ted Koppel, 65, said he is ending his long relationship with ABCNews when his contract expires in December. Although he said he isnot retiring, he turned down a chance to stay with the network andhost a Sunday morning news program.
