SunSoft's Three "Weapons"

BEIJING, February 13, AsiaInfo Services, Inc -- SunSoft Corp, a branch

Qld; Police shoot dead vicious pit bull terrier

A police officer shot and killed a vicious pit-bull terrier after the dog tried to
attack him as he went to the aid of a woman in north Queensland last night.

Cairns police say ambulance officers were called to a house in the Cairns suburb of
Machans Beach, where a woman reported her arm had been mauled by the pit-bull.

The ambulance officers were unable to get into the house past the dog, which was foaming
at the mouth, and called in the police, the RSPCA and city council dog handlers.

A woman, believed to be a relative of the dog's owners, has been taken to hospital.

Fed: Fed scheme inadequate for sacked textiles workers

The administrator of a collapsed Hunter Valley textiles company has admitted entitlements
paid under a proposed federal government safety net scheme would be far from adequate.

New South Wales Industrial Relations Minister JEFF SHAW says his staff met National
Textiles adminstrator, Star, Dean, Willcocks, last night and discussed the federal government's
proposed scheme for sacked workers which caps entitlements at $20,000.

He says the administrator explained how the federal scheme would work, but the details
simply emphasise it is far from a generous package, and is plainly inadequate.

The 342 former workers at the Rutherford factory have been told by company creditors
they will get only $7 million of their $11 million in entitlements and may have to wait
up to two years for their money.

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD says any merger of the ANZ Bank with the smaller St George
Bank will ultimately be a matter for the market.

ANZ has muscled in on its smaller rival, taking a 4.9 per cent stake in the Sydney-based
regional bank in a bid to position itself for future industry consolidation.

National Australia Bank has also picked up a similar-sized stake in St George, and
ANZ's entry sets the stage for a potential clash over control of the bank.

Mr HOWARD has told Adelaide radio 5DN that government policy is only to prevent a reduction
in the number of the four major banks - something a takeover of st George would not affect.

Opposition treasury spokesman Simon Crean ridiculed the tax reform call, issuing a parody
of Mr Howard's address under the heading "Howard's fireside chat: What he should have said".

"Six months ago, all Australians expressed a view on a tax system," Mr Crean said in a
statement.

"More than half of them voted against the complex and unfair GST proposed by the Howard
government."

Mr Crean said the real experience from Denmark, as in many other countries, was that the
GST inevitably rose.

"Yet it need not be that way," he said.

"An increase in the GST can be avoided by avoiding the GST itself."

NSW: Missing man found in grounds of colliery

SYDNEY, Dec 27 AAP - An elderly man missing after wandering away from a Christmas party on
the New South Wales Central Coast was found in the grounds of a colliery, police said.

Senior Constable Michael Vanhese of Toronto police said a worker found 75-year-old Fredrick
Jarvis slightly dehydrated but otherwise safe and well at the Newstand Colliery in Fassifern
just after 9am today.

The colliery was not far from the reserve on the shores of Lake Macquarie where Mr Jarvis
was last seen leaving the party on Christmas Day.

Snr Cons Vanhese said Mr Jarvis suffered from dementia and had gone missing a number of
times before.

Police had just called off a search when Mr Jarvis was found by the worker.

Mr Jarvis was taken to hospital for observation, Snr Cons Vanhese said.
